Egg retrieval, also known as oocyte retrieval, is a crucial step in in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and egg freezing procedures. It involves collecting mature eggs from the ovaries, typically using a thin needle guided by ultrasound. The procedure is usually performed under sedation or general anesthesia to ensure patient comfort.
While this sounds like it would be painful, in actuality, egg retrieval is a virtually painless process. This is because our patients are under the effects of IV sedation throughout the procedure.

The Egg Retrieval Process

Egg retrieval, also called oocyte aspiration, is a minor surgical procedure where mature eggs are collected from a woman’s ovaries after controlled ovarian stimulation. These eggs are then fertilized in our laboratory to create embryos.

  1. Ovarian Stimulation
    You’ll take hormone medications for 8–14 days to stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs.

  2. Monitoring
    Through ultrasounds and blood tests, we closely monitor your response and determine the right timing for retrieval.

  3. Trigger Shot
    When your follicles are ready, a trigger shot (usually hCG or Lupron) is administered to help the eggs mature.

  4. The Retrieval Procedure

    • Performed under light sedation or anesthesia.

    • A thin needle is guided through the vaginal wall using ultrasound to collect the eggs.

    • The procedure usually takes 20–30 minutes.

    • Recovery is quick, and most patients return home the same day.

  5. After Retrieval

    • You may feel mild cramping or bloating.

    • We’ll update you on the number of eggs retrieved.

    • You’ll rest, hydrate, and follow post-care instructions carefully.
